Default Rubi's Western Adventure 2013

Once again, the stars aligned and DCUBA made it out to the big hills for the annual March skiing and braaping extravaganza.

We got out here on Saturday. We looked into longterm lodging, but were getting the run-around on all fronts except one. We couldn't move into that place until Tuesday, so we secured a room at the Super 8 for a few days. It was a beautiful warm day (which sucked for keeping the snow soft,) but we didn't head into the hills for any recreation. Gerbil bought some ski boots, and I got enraged at the other ski shop for stonewalling me about some bindings I wanted mounted. After that we were pretty exhausted and called it a day.

The next day we went up to the skihill and skied an uninspiring 2" of fresh powder. It was kind of a Mookie day skiing groomed runs, but it was good enough to wear some of the rust off of our ski edges. That afternoon we caught the tail end of a Pawn Stars marathon, and it started dumping hard when Finding Bigfoot came on. The next day we skied 9" of fresh powder, and it was very good. Tuesday was slated for the inaugural braaping trip, and the weather didn't disappoint. It was sparkling bluebird with cold, crisp temperatures keeping the snow light. We hit the mountains on the west side of the valley and found some good snow. Protected areas in the trees and under steep ridges were quite nice and we ripped around to our hearts' content. It was inevitable that a big-dropping session would break out, and it certainly did. No cornice was safe from DCUBA's relentless tracks! Dang we did a lot of jumping. We vowed to quit big-dropping after I smashed my face into my windshield and Gerbil almost broke his spine, but later we were at it again.

Here's some braaping photos from that day:

That get anyone stoked for a ride? I hear some Nutz's are gonna be out here around the 23rd. It's pretty much going to rule!

I figured I'd load a couple of things up for your viewing pleasure (or maybe displeasure). Brains, Little Johnny (Baller's brother) and I got a mini-western adventure during the week before Easter. Arrived to blue skies, but it had snowed a fair amount in the days leading up to it. First day at the hill was good, but the next day, the guys on sleds towed Brains and I into some pretty fun play areas.

A couple of years ago, Brains and Baller got towed in for about 10 or 12 miles through pretty rough trail. Fortunately for us, it was only 4 or 5 miles and the trail was in great shape. Here's a sample of Gerbil's baller towing techniques:

I have a few other things to put up, but my camera got all messed up so I will need to edit out the parts where I'm taping my feet.

I'm not sure if he captured it on video but I did sent Mookie right into a stand of trees when I was going to pull him up a hill. I got about halfway up, looked back and there was no Mookie so I went back down to find him still trying to work his way out of the trees.

Not to mention when you were pulling Mack and you guys thought you could each go on opposite sides of a tree, without the rope stopping either of you? Or was Baller pulling him? Either way, it looked like it hurt like fuck lol.

I found it comical lol. I came through the trees and Baller is on one side of the tree with his snowmobile and Mack was on the other side of the tree laying on the ground. I thought huh, wtf are they doing? Then as I shut my machine off I could hear Mack yelling so I bent the tree over to relieve pressure from the rope so he could get his poles and ski out. Didn't laugh because it was painful for Mack, but as I pulled away I laughed about it most of the way down to the truck lol.

Can you spot Mookie in this picture? I can see a ski way up the hill, and then a pile of something buried in the snow. He's in there somewhere.

Spot the Gerbil in this picture. Clue: he had a little trouble making it around the tree.

Oh, there he is....

Here's a few pictures of the last ride of the year. I think this was two days ago. We hit a spot I've only been in once. We explored it way more thoroughly than I had before. There's tons of awesome riding up there. Some deadly avalanche terrain is readily accessible, but there's plenty of reasonable areas too.

Here's a couple from when Ratstang, Mud, and I went into Elk Flats. When Mud was out here several years ago, we unsuccessfully made an attempt to get back there, and Gerbil and I disastrously tried to access it from the other direction about three weeks ago. We finally made it back there, and were rewarded with nice snow and really fun terrain. Elk Flat is now on our list of must-revisit areas.

Mud is getting so ultra-aggressive it looks like his leg fell off:

Ratstang was so ultra-aggressive on this one that I couldn't get him in the frame of the picture: (Man, I wish I'd gotten that picture centered. It would have been BURLY!)

Here's one of Ratstang that is centered:

Mud found some nice powder by this treeline:

I've got a few more nice ones of the Slednutz Wydaho Group Ride. I'll put some more up when I get home. We're heading home tomorrow.
