Default index a helix.

1 take out the spring
2 put some grease or marker on the helix ramps
3 put the helix in without the spring, and dont touch the buttons, dont need the key in it.
4 put on the snap ring
5 turn helix to buttons and pull against snap ring.
6 keep rubbing it at that last quarter inch to tight against the snap ring, to wear off some of the marker
7 measure how far down the ramp the buttons are touching. if within an 1/8 of an inch leave it. any more than an 1/8 and machine the back of the helix where the washer goes to get very close to the tips of the helix.

this will add 2 things, one it can help get more top end shift out, and you will get more bang out of the helix.

the goal of this is to get the buttons to start as close as possible to the tips of the helix without hanging up or snaging the top edge.
