Default AR

I've been wanting to get an AR platform rifle for a while now, prices have finally fallen back in line but the political landscape looks like it could change that in the next year or two....So I've started thinkign now would be the time to get one. Primary purpose will be for plinking/deer/small game. From what I've been able to find, I think I've kind of figured out what I want, now the question is what MFG (whole or parts) and where to get it from? I know a few of you guys are into AR's so care to lend a few links?

What I'm thinking;
low round count (<250/yr) so barrel material is not as big of a factor
18" barrel 1:7 twist
mid-length gas system
low-pro gas block
flat top upper

Dont buy an olympic. DPMS and Bushmaster are average. Smith and Wesson are the best for the money. But for entry level, I would get a Rock river arms.

If I could have found a Rock River when I bought mine that's what I would have done. I found what was available right at the start of the craze last year and bought a DPMS in .223 with a 16" bull barrel, I haven't done much to it other than added a scope. With the short bull barrell I would suggest ear protection. Quinlan was able to pick up a Rock River last year, but not sure about the model of his.

If I could do things over again I'd try to find a DPMS .308.

Cabelas has the DPMS Oracle carbine for $600 with a cleaning kit and 4 mags. Even though it has the short barrel with 1:9 twist, I'm thinking it may be a good starter until i can find an upper I like?

I really would like to get a .308, but ammo costs twice as much and hunting areas are pretty heavily wooded so shots are all <100yds.

DPMS's work fine. It just doesnt have all the features that I like. The biggest plus of the RRA's for me is the trigger. They come factory with a 2 stage, and IMO thats a must.

The DPMS will be perfectly reliable.

Also stay away from the carbon fibers. While cheap, they just dont last a long.

Also the RRA's guarantee 1 MOA at 100 yards. Most will do that, but the RRA's guarantee is cool.

Nore than the oracle, but if I was just starting I would get this....

First, figure on changing to a JP trigger in any of them.

As long as you have a good fit between the upper and lower you off to a good start.

Building your lower gets you the exact butt and trigger you want cheaper. There not that hard to do if you can work on your own stuff with little direction. You can score lowers for $99 and parts for $60 up depending on upgrades.

Uppers, find a cheap complete one to get the receiver & parts. You can always change the barrel later. The DPMS heavy, short, flat can some times be found for $350 when the market is flooded with parts. There around $440 now.

cheap umph 7.62x39

JP triggers are nice, but not worth the money over a drop in RRA 2 stage. Also if you want more oomph, go with a .308 or 6.8. But frankly the 7.62x39 doesnt give you much over the 223. While it may have more knockdown power close, your really limiting yourself to 200 yard shot MAX.

This is kind of where I was at, find a cheap lower and a cheap upper. But $600 for the whole thing is about the same and then add a different upper or barrel later on down the road.

I always thought it was pointless to buy something cheap, and then upgrade it. You will save money in the long run by just getting what you want to begin with.

Something I've learned over the years Poser, you get what you paid for. We know your a cheap fucker, this isn't something you should skimp on though. Look at it as money in the bank, #1 selling gun for a year isn't it?

Basically I want to get one while I can and while their relatively cheaper again. And since I don't have any experience with an AR myself, I'd rather get in cheap and figure out how to make it work for me, and figure out if 5.56 is enough firepower....

So you can compare buying a used $2000 sled vs a new one vs spending the extra $200 on a higher quality AR?

I dont understand that logic at all.

The AR that I posted for you isnt really alot different when it comes to the basics, its just higher quality. It comes with better basic features also, thus resulting in not having to upgrade and the longevity will e better.

I am confused as to the power question. Its a .223/5.56, its not a powerhouse. Dont you have a .30-06 for deer hunting already? With a good shot and proper bullet the .223 is more than capable for taking a deer. But check your state laws, most states dont allow less than a .243 for deer hunting.

Then again, you asked for advice.

In reality if I'm buying a new gun it should be a new shot gun. So far i probably fire 3,000 shells per each .06 round i shoot annually....which also leads me to thinking if I do get one, it should probably be a .308 or at least a .300AAC. I'm really starting to think a 5.56 wouldn't make any sense at all.

308 nato will be the easiest to find ammo if the world goes up side down.

I wouldnt even consider a .300AAC, it will go away. Maybe a 6.8 SPC makes sense, but if your talking a .308 AR your jumping in price. That being said I would rather have a .308 AR over a 6.8, but it seems you are all about the $$$.

That being said, there are better platforms out there for the 7.62x51 Nato or .308 than an AR-10.

Blue is abosolutely correct, 308 is easy to find in an SHTF situation.

Poser, you have me all sorts of confused. Please state again what the purpose is for this firearm again.

There's no dedicated purpose, I just want one and it re-sparked my interests when I saw Cabelas had them on sale.

Besides, it seemed like this place was still a little slow and could use a posting boost!

New rings and pistons courtesy of GM and now my truck doesn't burn oil! or at least as much lol
