Default Official Ak4life winter adventure thread....enjoy yourself bitches!

Every adventure has to begin somewhere and mine always begins in the town of Wasilla Alaska. Wasilla is located about 40 mi north of Anchorage, its a town of about 30,000 and it located in the Matanuska Valley. The Valley is a blanket term that describes an area that has 5 towns and 3 mountain ranges converging there, the Talkeetna range, Alaska range and The Chugach mountains. Wasilla is the home of the Iron dog snowmachine race, said to be the toughest in the world. It also is the fastest growing community in the North America, most towns develope at about 2% a year Wasilla grows at a rate of 5%. The Iditarod sled dog race also on occasion starts here.

So I will start close to home, in the mountains I grew up in. Hatchers pass is in the Alaska range the base of which is about 13mi from my house. Its a historic mining district, and also a state park. When I say I grew up in theme mountains I mean I started skiing and snowboarding there as a child and and was there on a weekly basis for almost 20 years. I used to skip school and ride there and shit. If I had to leave Ak I think this is the place I would remember the most and how i would picture Alaska in my memories.
Unfortunatly the past two seasons have been horrible for snow up there and I havnt rode up the but a couple times in the past couple years, mostly pre-season snow. I am hoping for a good season because I really miss riding there. It usually has great pre-season riding due to the fact it has a gravel road that crosses the top of the pass and you can drive to the snow line.

The next stop on our journey is Whittier Alaska. This is a small as towns get, it is wedged on a delta that is only about one square mile wide. It is at the head of Passage canal a small inlet in Prince Williams Sound. The only way to get there is through the Whittier tunnel.

Here is a vid that I took of the Whittier Tunnel

Access to Whittier is gained by driving through Anchorage to the Turnagain arm that leads to the Kenai Pennensula. The tunnel entrance is at the Portage Glacier access. This is an awesome place to ride in the spring. Total drive time from my house is approximatly 2 hours.

Moving on down the road, next stop Turnagain Pass the home of Turnagain Hard Core. This place is unbeilivable, its almost as if it was designed for sleds. Turni is the first thing you have to go through when you actually enter the Kenai Pennensula, It is about 20 mi past the Portage Glacier road. The pass is divided into two halves, one side is non motorized while the other you can ride sleds on. Much like many of the coastal mountains getting 1200" of snow in a season thats about 100' of accumilated snow before it settles, and all of this is under 4000' elevation. Total driving time from my house is 2hrs.

The great part about Turni is if it is overcast and low visibility is you can ride down low in the trees and still be able to see and ride killer terrain. This place gets dumped on as you can see in these pics.

A common expression in Alaska is "If you dont like the weather.....wait 5 minutes" these pictures were taken the same day as the ones above. Weather moves fast in the coastal mtns.

I dont think I know you, but Ak is the smallest big place in the world it seems like so there is a possibility. Good to see another Alaskan on the site, If you have any pics and stories you want to add feel free. I am but one man adrift in an ocean of snowmachining.

Next stop on the tour is Lost Lake, located in Seward Alaska. Seward is 126mi south of Anchorage on the eastern side of the Kenai Pennensula. It sits in Resurrection Bay, in the Gulf of Alaska. Seward is a fishing town and a tourist trap in the summer. The population explodes in the summer with recreationalists. The place is pretty dreary in the winter it kind of shuts down and the Lost Lake is the really the only reason to be there in the winter. It is very seldom clear, it is always snowing in mountains but when it clears of it is unbelievable. Total drive time is about 3-4hrs.

The trail in can get kind of interesting some times, it has the nickname "the chute". Its a single track trail that climbs 2000' in less than 2 miles through the trees. It becomes glare ice in a matter of hours, some times you have to ski pull to get up it. I have never personaly had to but a couple locals I know have talked about using ropes and pulleys to get sleds up and down. When it icy, coming down is just a tobbogin run you just bounce off of shit and hang on.

Over looking the city of Seward

Sounds like a hell of a good time. Nice pictures, AK. I'd like to make it up there someday. Maybe as a Crab Fisherman?

Well seeing that the snow has started falling and the mountains are almost ready to ride I should finish my tour, so I can get my "winter on" properly.

This next spot is called Petersville, its about 70mi. north of Wasilla. Petersville sits in the long shadow of Mt. Mckinley and is rediculously huge. I have no idea how big it is but there is no way you could ride it all.......ever.
Usually Pville gets unbelivable amounts of snow. Pville is probably the most diverse place to ride in Alaska, if you like wide open trail riding this is the closest you can find up here. The thousands of miles of swamps that create a huge network of trails that criss cross the land scape. The coolest part of Pville I think is the negative geography, deep ravines cut by glaciers have left these perfect little riding spots. You can find hills that will shut down the baddest mountain sleds with out running the risk of avalanches. Pville is a great place to go when we havnt had snow for a bit, it is guarenteed you will find untracked snow and you dont have to look far it just that big. Its also the wind lip capital, hard winds roll across the flats from Mt. Mckinley and create huge cornices everywhere.

The snow depth

Miles and miles of riding

The snow is good from November to May or June, its the daylight you have to worry about. March is a good month to come up. The temp is a bit milder and we get about 8-10 hrs of good daylight.
